1. “Crying” is used here in the sense of proclaiming for sale. For a description of a runaway slave named Sam, see Lund Washington to GW, 30 Mar. 1767.

2. “Mrs Simpson” was probably the wife of Gilbert Simpson (d. 1773) who rented land from GW at Mount Vernon on Clifton’s Neck. Peg was a slave on River farm; one of the slaves named Doll was also on River farm and the other was a house servant.
