Joseph Thompson, master of the schooner Swift, sold for GW his slave Tom in St. Kitts “to a certn Mr French” for £40 in St. Kitts money “equal to £27.17.6 Virga Curr[enc]y” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 245). GW received from Thompson one 66–gallon hogshead of “Spirits,” two “potts of Sweat Meats 10 lbs.,” and “2 half Joes[,] 1 Pistole,” and “Small Silver.” For “freight & Comm[issio]n of the Negroe,” Thompson charged £5 in St. Kitts money.

2. Young Alexander Henderson (d. 1815), agent for Glassford & Co. of Glasgow, Scotland, was one of the Scottish merchants in Colchester.

3. Joseph Thompson began renting one of GW’s farms on the Bullskin in 1766, and he rented it for six years for £18 a year. See General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. William Jolliffe was one of several sons of the Quaker attorney William Jolliffe, Sr. (1695–1765), who were living in Frederick County at this time.

4. Capt. David Kennedy rented another of GW’s farms on the Bullskin in 1766 for £28 a year, and he continued renting for seven years (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , 22). Kennedy had been assistant commissary and quartermaster in GW’s Virginia Regiment.

5. A bottle slider is a tray or coaster for bottles.
