1. This is the first entry in GW’s cash accounts of charges for cloth produced by his weavers even though GW’s “An Account of Weaving done by Thomas Davis &ca in the Year 1767” (DLC:GW), as well as several individual accounts in General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio reveal that his weavers were supplying people with cloth from the beginning of the year. GW’s elaborate account of the weaving done under the supervision of Thomas Davis runs from 1 Jan. 1767 until 30 Mar. 1771. In 1767 Davis was responsible for weaving slightly over 1,500 yards of linen, wool, and cotton cloth of various sorts, valued at £51.11.1.

2. “Coats” has not been identified. A William Coarts voted for GW and John Posey in the Fairfax County burgess election on 1 Dec. 1768.

3. GW sold John Dulan 23½ yards of plaid cloth and 9 yards of “bird eye Linn[e]n” for £1.14.3. Dulan made up the difference between this and the £1.2 cash by supplying GW with chickens and eggs (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 251).

4. Charles Washington at the same time also gave to George Thrift for GW 1,000 pounds of tobacco. GW records in his ledger on 26 July 1767 that he had repaid his brother the tobacco and the £1.11 (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 197).

5. William Ellzey (d. 1796), who lived in Dumfries, practiced law in several counties, including Fairfax. See note 10.

6. This was probably Dr. Thomas Thomson of Westmoreland County.

7. Lettice Corbin’s “Negro Bricklayer” had worked for GW from 3 April 1765 until 12 June 1766 “at the rate of £25. pr Ann.” This was pay for the period from 3 April 1766 to 12 June 1766, “being 70 days” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. 8. Peter Gaullatt has not been identified.

9. On this day GW bought from the executors of George Johnston (d. 1766) a servant woman named Catherine Boyd for £10. Johnston owed GW £5.9.8, and GW gave the executors £4.10.4 additional money in cash (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. 10. It was on this date that GW as churchwarden held the sale of the Truro Parish glebe and plate.
