To George Washington from Lettice Corbin, 31 March 1766 [letter not found]

Letter not found: from Lettice Corbin, 31 Mar. 1766. The letter, written from Essex, had attached to it GW’s receipt dated 9 April (Thomas Birch’s Sons, catalog no. 663, item 59, 21–23 April 1891).1

1In his account with Mrs. Corbin, GW made this entry: “April 3d—By hire of her Negro Bricklayer (who came to work here the 3d of April 1765) at the rate of £25 pr Ann:” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 205). The letter and receipt undoubtedly relate to extending the time the bricklayer would remain in GW’s employ, for the next entry in the account with Mrs. Corbin is for 12 June 1766: “By Ditto from the 3d of April till the date @Ditto being 70 days—£4.15.7.” Lettice, or Letitia, Corbin (c.1715–1768) was the sister of George Lee, Ann Fairfax Washington’s second husband, and the widow of John Corbin (1715–1757) of Portobago, Essex County.
