1. The letter from John Ross of Philadelphia to Robert Adam, dated 1 Mar. 1774 and docketed by GW, is in DLC:GW. In the letter Ross, who had stopped importing Germans several years earlier, detailed some of the excessive costs and the difficulties involved in the trade and added that it was almost impossible to persuade the Germans to immigrate anywhere in America except Pennsylvania.
