2Since 1741 John Sheridine of Charles County, Md., had been leasing 200 acres of the tract at Mount Vernon which GW bought from William Clifton in 1760. On 9 Aug. 1773 Sheridine signed a quitclaim and a receipt, giving up his lease for GW’s payment of £9 Maryland currency. A photographic copy of the quitclaim and receipt, in GW’s hand with Sheridine’s mark affixed and witnessed by Caleb Stone, Thomas Bishop, and David Cowan, is in MWA. A typescript is in CD-ROM:GW.
