Memorandum List of Quitrents

1772. “A List of Lands belonging to Geo: Washington in the Northern Neck—on wch Quit-rents became due Michaelmas 1772.”1

1What follows is identical with what was printed in Memorandum: List of Quitrents, 1769, except for the 200 acres of land which he acquired from John Posey, added in 1771 (see Memorandum: List of Quitrents, 1771) and 200 acres from John West, Jr., and 75 from Valinda Wade, which were added to this 1772 memorandum, making a total in Fairfax County of 5,793 acres, an overall total of 12,738, and the total levy paid to £15.18.4. John Hough’s appended receipt for payment of the levy is dated 20 July 1773 and acknowledges the payment of “the further Sum of Eighteen Shillings ⟨nine⟩ for ten years arrearage of Quit-rents of the above Seventy five acres bought of Valinda Wade.” The entire document appears in CD-ROM:GW.
