Alexandria, Feby 15th 1772

Dr Sir,

It was rather late in the day when your Man handed me your favor of the 10th Inst: therefore did not care to detain him to acknowledge the receipt of your Bill for £53. Sterling for the use of Mrs Savage, which I shall take care to send to Mr Dixon by the first Oppy, & dare say he will remit her the value immediately, shall at the same time send your Letter of advice to Mr Gildart1—I hope you have fully explained to Mrs Savage your late transaction with regard to her Annuity—to be sure Doctr Savage can have no objections to pay you for the future, so that you may have this Money replaced again2—I shall take care to see her Power of Attorney to Mr Montgomerie ‘tho. I fear it is as the Doctor says3—I wish you health to prosecute your journey, as I fear it will be a very disagreeable one.4 I am, Dr Sir, Yrs &c.

1. No letter from GW to Piper dated 10 Feb. has been found, but in his letter dated in his letter book 27 Jan. GW writes Piper that he is enclosing a bill for £53 sterling. GW’s letter to James Gildart is dated 28 January.

2. See GW to Margaret Savage, 27 January. “This Money” is the £53 sterling that GW is sending to Mrs. Savage.

3. Thomas Montgomerie held the power of attorney from both Dr. and Mrs. Savage. See Henry Lee and Daniel Payne to GW, 24 April 1767, n.1. See also GW to Margaret Savage, 5 Sept. 1771, and Bryan Fairfax to GW, 16 April 1770, for more on the conflicting powers of attorney.
