2. On 17 Mar. GW entered the following agreement with James Hill: “This day agreed with Mr James Hill as a Manager, and Overlooker of all the Plantations belonging to Mr Jno. Parke Custis, together with his other business—as also of my Plantation in King William, Lotts in Williamsburg &ca—For which well and faithfully executed I have promised to allow him the said Hill the Sum of One hundd pounds Curry pr Annum” (ADS, MH). The draft in GW’s hand of a 1772 penalty bond of £1,000 to be signed by the new manager of GW’s and John Parke Custis’s estates in tidewater Virginia is in the Custis Papers (ViHi). 5. In 1765 John Semple bought from Thomas Colvill a 6,300–acre tract in Frederick County, Md., called Merryland. In financial difficulties, Semple in 1771 transferred his interest in the Merryland tract to three merchants, Thomas Montgomerie and Cumberland Wilson of Dumfries and Adam Stewart of Georgetown, Maryland. GW as a trustee for the Colvill estate participated in the negotiations with the merchants to set the amount owed on the tract and the mode of payment. On 23 Jan. 1771 Montgomerie, Wilson, and Stewart gave the Colvill trustees bills of exchange on Glasgow houses totaling £816.13.7 (John Semple to GW, 8 Jan. 1770, source note; Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. On 18 Mar. 1772 GW sold the bills drawn by Thomas Montgomerie and Cumberland Wilson to John Tabb of Petersburg. On 9 April he sold Adam Stewart’s bill to Edward Charlton. 6. In May 1771 Col. Lewis Burwell of Kingsmill, James City County, bought from GW for £130 “4 Chariot Horses—to be paid for at the Octr Genl Court” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. On 21 Mar. 1772 GW received £74.3 in partial payment “By Cash of your Son Thacker” (General Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. 7. Dudley Digges’s name headed the list of directors for a lottery in an advertisement placed in Purdie and Dixon’s Virginia Gazette (Williamsburg) on 18 May 1769 by John Thompson of Yorktown. To raise the money to pay his debts, Thompson was offering as prizes in the lottery to be held on 20 June houses, lots, a warehouse, slaves, livestock, and a variety of goods.
