5In 1765 John Semple bought from Thomas Colvill a 6,300–acre tract in Frederick County, Md., called Merryland. In financial difficulties, Semple in 1771 transferred his interest in the Merryland tract to three merchants, Thomas Montgomerie and Cumberland Wilson of Dumfries and Adam Stewart of Georgetown, Maryland. GW as a trustee for the Colvill estate participated in the negotiations with the merchants to set the amount owed on the tract and the mode of payment. On 23 Jan. 1771 Montgomerie, Wilson, and Stewart gave the Colvill trustees bills of exchange on Glasgow houses totaling £816.13.7 (John Semple to GW, 8 Jan. 1770, source note; Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds.
