1. See Thomas Newton, Jr., to GW, 22 Mar., 13 Aug. 1773. On 20 or 22 Nov. GW entered in his : “To Cash recd from Mr Thos Newton of Norfolk by the hands of Mr Jas Hill wch with my Order on Hill in favr of my Br. Jno. for £100 & pd him out of this money makes [£]228.”
4. The Virginia Gazette (Purdie and Dixon; Williamsburg) for 13 May 1773 announced the formation, under the governor’s patronage, of a Society for the Advancement of Useful Knowledge in Virginia. John Clayton was made president, John Page vice president, Samuel Henley secretary, St. George Tucker assistant secretary, and David Jameson treasurer. The first meeting was called for 3 Nov. at the Capitol (Virginia Gazette [Purdie and Dixon; Williamsburg], 28 Oct. 1773). GW makes no mention in his diary of a meeting on this date.

6. Elkanah Deane (d. 1775), an Irish coachmaker, had made a coach for Lord Dunmore when Dunmore was governor of New York. By 1772 he had moved to Williamsburg where he operated a forge and harness shop.
7. Added to this entry in GW’s is “to Mr Andw Grant.” GW paid this amount to Andrew Grant on this day in partial payment for the two slaves he had bought in April 1773 from Robert Washington. See GW to Fielding Lewis, 20 April 1773, n.12, and , folio 86.
