From George Washington to Abraham Yates, Jr., 6 September 1776

To Abraham Yates, Jr.

Head Quarters New York. Sept. 6th 1776.

Sir

I have now before me your letter of the 4th Instt inclosing the report against ordering out any more of the militia from the counties of Orange, Dutchess, West Chester or Ulster—The reasons alledged by the Commee, to whom this matter was referred, are entirely satisfactory to me, and therefore I do not expect a compliance with that part of my letter which respects this matter. I have the honor &C.

G.W.

LB, in William Grayson’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW. The New York committee of safety read this letter on 9 Sept., and it is printed in the N.Y. Prov. Congress Journals description begins Journals of the Provincial Congress, Provincial Convention, Committee of Safety, and Council of Safety of the State of New-York, 1775–1776–1777. 2 vols. Albany, 1842. (Microfilm Collection of Early State Records). description ends , 1:615. That text, which presumably was taken from the unfound receiver’s copy, is nearly identical in the wording to the LB.
