Exeter [N.H.] 24 Sept. 1776. Informs that in accordance with a request received on 14 Sept. from the Continental Congress, “this State hath raised one thousand Men who are just beginning their March for New York—They are form’d into two Regiments of five hundred Men each under Coll Thomas Tash, and Coll Nahum Baldwin, who are ordered to march their Regiments forward with all possible speed, & put themselves under Your Direction at New York and continue so until the first of December next.”1

Thomas Tash (1722–1809), who had served as a provincial captain during the French and Indian War, represented Newmarket in the assembly before his appointment as colonel of the first regiment of reinforcements on 17 September. In December 1777 he became a member of the assembly representing New Durham, the Gore, and Wolfeborough. Nahum Baldwin, Sr. (1734–1788), of Amherst was also a member of the assembly when he was appointed colonel of the second regiment of reinforcements on 17 September. He had been named treasurer of Hillsborough County in January 1776, and in June he had become mustermaster for all forces raised in New Hampshire. Baldwin was appointed a justice of the peace for Hillsborough County in June 1777.
