From George Washington to Ephraim Blaine, 31 January 1778

To Ephraim Blaine

Moore Hall [Pa.] January 31st 1778

This Letter will accompany one from the Committee of Congress requiring your attendance at this Place.1 In addition, I shall Inform you that by a return from the Commissary of Issues we have only 90 head of Cattle in Camp, and the troops only served for this day; Moreover that he Knows not of any supplies Coming on. It also appears by the said return that there is only 560 Barrels of Flour this I mention for your Government.2 I am sir Your very Hble Servt

1The enclosed letter of this date from Francis Dana to Blaine reads simply: “The Committee of Congress now setting in Camp, request your immediate attendance here” (Ephraim Blaine Papers, DLC: Peter Force Collection). Blaine conferred with the committee at Moore Hall on 3 Feb. (see Smith, Letters of Delegates description begins Paul H. Smith et al., eds. Letters of Delegates to Congress, 1774–1789. 26 vols. Washington, D.C., 1976–2000. description ends , 9:7; see also Blaine to GW, 4 February).

2The “Return of provisions remaining in Camp after Serving the Troops for 31st (Inst.) January 1778” by Deputy Commissary General of Issues Thomas Jones indicates that there were in camp 560 barrels of flour, 291 barrels of biscuits, 47 barrels of salt provision, half a barrel of shad, 3 barrels of tongue, 2,000 loaves of bread weighing 10,000 pounds, 1 hogshead of spirits, 7 hogsheads of rum, 3 hogsheads of gin, 4 hogsheads of whiskey, 2 hogsheads of bacon, 1 hogshead of beef, 2 hogsheads of molasses, 9 hogsheads of salt, 4 hogsheads of biscuits, 2 tierces of smoked gammon, 2 tierces of fresh gammon, half a tierce of rice, a tierce of biscuits, and 90 head of cattle (DNA:PCC, item 192).
