Not having the Honor of being personally known to your Excely I have taken the Liberty of transmitting you the inclosed Letter1—I have likewise wrote to our Senators on the same business not knowing through what channel your Excely may think proper to recieve applications of this nature. Benjamin Nicholson (d. 1792), a native of Kent County, Md., was a lawyer, merchant, and millowner in Baltimore County and served on various local bodies before the Revolution. He served as a captain in the Baltimore County militia and from 1777 to 1781 was lieutenant colonel of the Baltimore Town Battalion. In 1781 he accepted a reduced rank as a captain in the Volunteer Troop of Light Dragoons. Nicholson received no federal appointment, but in 1791 he was appointed chief judge of the Baltimore city court.
1. The enclosure has not been identified, but the endorsement on Nicholson’s covering letter reads: “From Benjn Nicholson Esqr. for a continuance in the office of Admiralty Judge for Maryland.”
