To George Washington from Thomas Jefferson, 22 December 1790

From Thomas Jefferson

December 22nd 1790.

Th. Jefferson has the honor to inform the President that his letter to Gouverneur Morris is dated December 17th.1

he incloses him a letter from Mr James Brown just now received.2

LB, DLC:GW.

1GW had apparently asked Jefferson for the date of his letter, perhaps to give his own letter to Morris of the same date (see GW to Morris, 17 Dec. 1790).

2According to his Summary Journal of Public and Private Letters (DLC: Jefferson Papers), Jefferson received a letter from James Brown dated Danville, Ky., 1 Oct. 1790, on 22 Dec. 1790. This letter has not been found, but it probably expressed Brown’s decision not to accept the post of U.S. attorney for Kentucky. This post went instead to William Murray (see GW to the U.S. Senate, 25 Feb. 1791).
