Sir,
Your letter of the 24th ulto, (enclosing a letter from Govr St Clair, and sundry papers relating to the subject of the settlements which have been made under purchases from Judge Symmes) I have duly received.1 The Secretary of State, as well as I recollect, has already written to both Govr. St Clair & Judge Symmes on this subject;2 but whether he has or has not, it can make no material difference to let the matter rest until my return to Philada when I shall pay the necessary attention to it.3 I am, Sir, Yr most hble Servt

1. Alexander Hamilton’s letter of 24 Sept. 1791 covered a letter of 8 Aug. from Arthur St. Clair with various enclosures (DLC:GW). Neither St. Clair’s letter nor the enclosed papers have been identified. St. Clair had written earlier to Hamilton about the unauthorized land sales near Fort Washington (Cincinnati, Ohio) of territorial judge John Cleves Symmes (see St. Clair to Hamilton, 25 May, 21 July 1791, in 8:360–63, 562–63).
2. On 7 Aug. Thomas Jefferson sent GW copies of his letters to St. Clair and Symmes on the Symmes’s Purchase. See also Jefferson to GW, 10 Nov., n.1.
3. GW returned to the federal capital on 21 October.
