From Robert Bourne

1791 London 09th December

Much Respected Sir

A Church is Requir’d to be Built in London—to be Call’d the American Church—The appointments with you1 with Great Respect I remain

Robert Bourne

ALS, DLC:GW.

1On 10 Dec. 1791 Robert Bourne informed “the president of the Congress” that “General Washington has been wrote too on the Subject” of the American Church in London, and Bourne expressed his hope that “it will meet Your full approbation” (DLC:GW). No evidence has been found suggesting that GW consulted with Thomas Jefferson or others about either of these letters or presented them to Congress. No further mention of Bourne and the American Church in London is found GW’s papers.
