William Rowley (1742-1806) served as a British army surgeon from 1760 to 1765 before entering private practice in 1766. Licensed by the London College of Physicians in 1784, he took degrees at Oxford University in 1784, 1787, and 1788. He was a prolific writer on a variety of medical subjects.
1. GW replied in a letter to Rowley of 15 Aug. 1795: "I have been honored with four volumes of your ’Rational practice of Physic’ wch you had the goodness to send me, and for which mark of your polite attention, let me entreat you, Sir, to receive the best thanks of Your most Obedt & obliged Hble Servt" (ADfS, owned 2009 by Steven L. Saunders; LB, DLC:GW). The four volumes, published at London in 1793, were listed in the inventory of GW’s estate (Griffin, Catalogue of the Washington Collection, 551) and are currently at CtHT-W. The first volume is inscribed by Rowley, "For His Excellency General Washington From the author."
