Je n’ai point voulu partir pour Suivre Mr de la fayette dans l’Expedition, que votre excellence a projette contre le gal arnold Sans obtenir d’elle la permission d’etre temoin des Succès, que Son courage, et Son zele peut nous donner lieu d’Esperer.1
Mon attachement pour la cause commune, et L’amitiée, que Mr de la fayette veut bien avoir pour moi m’engagent à lui demander de Servir comme Simple volontaire dans le detachement, que vous lui avez confié,2 j’ecris à ce Sujet à Mr Le comte de rochambeau et j’ose me flatter qu’il ne desapprouvera pas mes demarches;3 je me regarderois comme très heureux Si elles pouvoient avoir l’approbation de Vôtre Excellence. honorez moi du titre de Soldat de votre armée, et permettez moi de vous assurer de mon attachement, et du profond respect avec lequel je Suis De votre Excellence Le très humble et très obeissant Serviteur

GW replied to Charlus from headquarters at New Windsor on 23 March: “On my return from Newport I had the pleasure of finding your letter of the 1st from Philada: Convinced that you would not have taken a step in the least disagreeable to His Excellency the Count de Rochambeau, I cannot but be flattered with the Offer you make of attending the Marquis de la Fayette as a Volunteer in the American Army—I wish and hope that every thing may concure to make the expedition perfectly agreeable to you” (Df, in Tench Tilghman’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW). GW had departed for Newport on 2 March, and he returned on 20 March (see GW to Rochambeau, 2 March, and to Chastellux, 21 March, DLC:GW).
