Head Quarters Middle Brook 15th Feby 1779

Sir

Colo. Ward Commy General of Musters having been unfortunately taken prisoner and Lt Colo. Bradford the only Deputy now here having announced to me his intention to resign that Office as soon as he can be releived, I am to request your removal to the Head Quarters of the Army as soon as you can make it convenient, leaving some person to the Northward who can execute the Office of Muster Master to the troops in that department.1 I am Sir Your most obt Servt.

1. For the capture of Col. Joseph Ward by a party of Loyalists at Kakiat (now New Hampstead), N.Y., on 27 Nov. 1778, see Christian Febiger to GW, 29 Nov. 1778, and n.5, and Nathanael Greene to GW, 30 Nov. 1778. Ward was exchanged by 31 March 1779, when he left New York. He returned to duty with the Continental army by 6 April (see Ward to GW, that date). The resignations of deputy mustermasters general Lt. Col. William Bradford, Jr., and Lt. Col. George Noarth were accepted by Congress on 1 April (see JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends , 13:403).
