24 June 1811, Belmont. “A relation & friend of mine, Mr. Mordecai Booth of Winchester, wishing to get a place now vacant in the department of war; in the disposal, as he says, of Mr. Simmons; has requested of me to mention his wishes to you.… I hope I do not presume, too much on our acquaintanceship, to ask this favor of you.” Adds that Booth is qualified for the position.

1. Ludwell Lee (1760–1836) was a son of Richard Henry Lee. He studied law at the College of William and Mary, served with Lafayette during the Revolution, and represented Prince William County in the Virginia General Assembly. A Federalist in his politics, he retired from public life after 1800, moved to Loudoun County, and near Leesburg built the house he named Belmont (Lee, Lee Chronicle, pp. 280–81).
