Recd the above $35.68 but it is understood to be without prejudice to any other or further legal claim which the Society may have on Account of those Warehouses which may have been destroyed by time or otherwise

John henderson had taken out a policy on the Milton warehouses on 4 May 1799 (Vi: Business Records Collection, Mutual Assurance Society Declarations, no. 337). Brown’s failure to sign the receipt above shows that TJ did not settle the account at this time. On 7 Aug. 1813 TJ calculated that the society’s claim “for the scalehouse, transfer & warehouse Milton 1809–13” ought to be $38.30 plus commission, but he chose not to pay, noting that the society had then omitted it in its account and concluding that these buildings had been, “if I recollect rightly, withdrawn from insurance by me heretofore” (, 2:1292).
On 8 Apr. 1812 Brown reported to Samuel Greenhow, the principal agent of the society, that “Mr Jefferson does not consider himself bound to pay the arrearages for Hendersons mill, the ground of his opinion I stated to you some time ago. Jno Henderson the Guardn of the Legatees of Bt Henderson is insolvent & the legatees all without the State. I shall wait your instructions in this case. Can a purchaser be made personally answerable for what is due at the time of the purchase, unless the property be transfered to him in the manner prescribed by the rules of the Society? I should be glad of advice upon this point as it frequently occurs” (Vi: Mutual Assurance Society, Incoming Correspondence).
