German immigrant Marten Wanscher of Alexandria did plaster work at Monticello from 1801 to 1802, and again for several months in 1804. TJ had made several payments to Wanscher since the completion of his first term of employment in April 1802, including most recently a $30 payment on 4 Dec. A letter from Wanscher to TJ dated 2 Dec. 1802, recorded in SJL as received on 3 Dec. with the notation “30. D.,” has not been found (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C.
