General Orders
Head-Quarters Middle-Brook tuesday March 9th 1779.
Parole Palestine—C. Signs Paros—Paris—
Captain Jeremiah Brewen is to superintend the Artificers during the absence of Colonel Baldwin & to be respected accordingly.1
All officers and soldiers absent on furlough from any part of the Army either immediately under the Commander in Chief or else-where are required without fail to join their Corps before the 1st of May next: This order is not to affect those whose leave of absence will expire before that period; who will be expected to return punctually at the expiration of their respective furloughs. Such officers of the Virginia line who having been on furlough have since been appointed to a particular duty under Brigadier General Scott are not comprehended.2

Adj. Gen. Alexander Scammell’s orderly book entry for this date includes the following additional general order: “1 Capt. 1 Sub: 2 serjeants & 38 R[ank] & F[ile] from Genl Woodfords Brigade for fatigue Tomorrow to parade at nine oClock in the morning.” (orderly book, 22 Dec. 1778–26 June 1779, DNA: RG 93, Orderly Books, 1775–1783, vol. 28).
1. Jeremiah Bruen (c.1743–1809) of Newark, N.J., had been appointed a captain in Col. Jeduthan Baldwin’s Continental quartermaster artificer regiment in March 1777. He was promoted to major of that regiment on 12 Nov. 1779 and served until 1 July 1781.
