8Analysis of handwriting has led the editors to conclude that this note and the one immediately following were written by Henry Potts, secretary of the Post Office, 1760–62, 1765–68 (see above, IX, 179 n), and not by his nephew Samuel, controller of the Inland Office, 1765–87, whom BF also knew.

9This note and the one immediately following cannot have been written any later because of Potts’ death, Jan. 1, 1768.
