Hartford, August 15, 1794. “I have taken a mortgage of Col Timothy Seymour as I proposed2 dated this day for the better security of his debt due Wadsworth & Church3 of a good tract of Land in this Town of One & twenty acres more or less fully sufficient I believe to keep our debt which is … £800 0 0 Lawfull Money.”

1Wadsworth, a resident of Hartford, was a member of the House of Representatives from Connecticut from 1789 to 1795.

3John B. Church had been Wadsworth’s partner during the American Revolution and was married to Angelica Schuyler, H’s sister-in-law. H managed Church’s business affairs in the United States.
