saturday the 17th: the next day, 18 Dec., Bishop attended a dinner hosted by the vice president at Tunnicliff’s Washington City Hotel. New York congressmen Samuel L. Mitchill and Daniel C. Verplanck also attended the event, but it was the New Haven collector’s presence in Washington that was noted in James Cheetham’s newspaper, where he was associated with Burr’s friends “from New-York and other places” who were zealously planning to restore Burr’s influence ( , 2:814n; New York American Citizen, 27 Jan. 1804; , 2:1033n).
