Sir

Knowing that you have honored with your friendship our excellent & much lamented father we think it our duty to inform you of his death, which took place on the 7th instant after a very severe and painfull illness of eleven days—

you will find in the national intelligencer in Niles Register and in the Aurora a short notice of his life; not much known in this Country which is the Country of his Children & Great Children we thought it was proper to publish a Sketch in order to point out his worth & his deeds, and hope it will meet with your approbation—

We inclose a pamphlet on education received by him few weeks ago with a request to forward you one.

President Jefferson’s Library, 1829 description ends , 5 [no. 211]; TJ’s copy in DLC: Rare Book and Special Collections, with handwritten, signed inscription by Jullien dated Paris, 1 Apr. 1817: “À Monsieur jefferson, Ancien président des Etats-Unis, Hommage d’estime respectueuse de la part de l’auteur, qui lui a déjà offert, il y a neuf ans, un Essai Général d’Education physique, morale et intellectuelle, et qui désire vivement qu’un citoyen aussi distingué veuille appuyer de son suffrage dans sa patrie l’entreprise philantropique dont on ébauche ici le plan” [“To Mr. Jefferson, former president of the United States, a tribute of respectful esteem on the part of the author, who has already sent him nine years ago his Essai Général d’Éducation physique, morale, et intellectuelle, and who has a lively hope that such a distinguished citizen would like to support by his commendation, in his country, the philanthropic enterprise outlined in this plan”]).
