AD, ViHi: Custis Papers; AD, ViLxW: Washington’s Account Book, both in GW’s hand and essentially identical. There is also John Mercer’s earlier draft of this document (see source note, doc. III-C–1).
1. See doc. III-A–8.
2. See doc. III-A–4. In Mercer’s draft this is one-third of £370.4.3, or a total of £123.8.1 (ViHi: Custis Papers).
3. GW first carried over the debit and credit totals here to an account in that he set up for Martha Parke Custis, dating these totals October 1759. The account in runs until October 1761, but GW abandoned that account after making an entry for 22 Oct. 1761. He then struck the balances for this original account in the Account Book (£7,426.17.11 current money and £1,599.8.3½ sterling) and carried the total over to the guardian’s account that he set up for Martha Parke Custis (doc. IV-C). See also docs. III-C–1 and III-C–2.
