There is no Busts of Alexander the Great (none at all of Charles 12th of Sweeden) Julius Cæsar, King of Prussia, Prince Eugene nor Duke of Marlborough of the Size desird; and to make Models woud be very Expensive—at least 4 Guineas each. but I can make Busts exactly to the Size wrote for (15 inches) and very good ones at the rate of 16/ Each of—Homer, Virgil, Horace, Cicero, Plato, Aristotle, Seneca, Galens, Vestall Virgin[,] Faustina[,] Chaucer, Spencer, Johnson, Shakespear, Beaumont[,] Fletcher, Milton, Prior, Pope, Congreve, Swift, Addison, Dryden, Locke, Newton46

GW ordered these goods on 20 Sept. 1759 and on 10 Aug. 1760 acknowledged receipt.

1Theodosia Crowley & Co. was an ironmongery on Thames Street.

2These were probably handles made of boxwood, which was much used in the eighteenth century.

3GW’s invoice to Robert Cary & Co. of 20 Sept. 1759 calls this “Wheel Rights Buz.”

4Edward Hippisley was a merchant on Lime Street.

5Crocus was a coarse cloth like gunny or burlap.

6Richard Lomax Clay was an oilman on Fishstreet Hill, London.

7A pottle is a liquid measure of four pints.

8A firken is a cask roughly one-quarter of a barrel.

9John Moseley was a slopseller on Lower Thames Street. Slops was cheap clothing.

10Francis Nalder was a cheesemonger at no. 4 Honey-Lane Market.

11Benjamin Kenton had his wine and beer business at no. 152 Minories, near Aldgate.

12In 1771 H. Freake succeeded the late Mr. Scherzberg at the Golden Lion in Tavistock Street, Covent Garden.

13“Shanaell” is chenille.

14Hesketh & Hawkes were mercers at the Wheatsheaf in Tavistock Street, Covent Garden.

15This was a kind of headdress with wires forming the outstretched wings of a large butterfly.

16Lappets were ribbon strips made to hang from a woman’s headdress.

17Cypress was a silk gauze dyed black.

20Chevaux de frise was a name for jagged edges of women’s dresses and caps.

45Sir Henry Cheere had a “Statuary” at Old-Palace-Yard, Westminster, and John Cheere’s was at Hyde Park Corner.
