AD, General Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 62–63.

For the background to the debt of William Armistead to the Custis estate, see doc. III-B, n.14, in Settlement of the Daniel Parke Custis Estate, 20 April 1759–5 Nov. 1761. The bill of exchange for £196.5.5 that the trustees of Armistead’s estate gave GW in May 1763 was returned by Robert Cary & Co. under protest. The sum of £250 Virginia currency left £104.3.3 owing on Armistead’s debt (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 192; General Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 14). See also Cash Accounts, May 1765, n.3, Memorandum, 20 Nov. 1772, and note 5 of that document.

The £55.17 given to James Hill completed Burwell’s payment for the chariot horses that Burwell bought from GW in 1771 (see Cash Accounts, March 1772, n.6).

On 28 May GW entered into an agreement with Charles West of Loudoun County to buy a tract of land on Dogue Creek “adjoining the Lands of the Honble George Wm Fairfax” for twenty-five shillings an acre, the first payment of £200 to be made in November 1772 and the remainder in November 1773 and 1774 (NjMoHP). West’s deed of release of the tract describing the property and transferring it to GW on the payment of £605 current money is dated 28 Oct. 1772 and was recorded in the Fairfax County court on 16 Nov. 1772 (ViMtvL). A month before the deed of release, on 30 Sept. 1772, West gave GW a “bond warranting . . . [the land] against prior claims or future suits” (Parke-Bernet catalog, Nov. 16–17, 1938, item 379). See GW to West, 6 June 1769 and notes. For GW’s sale of 72 of the 484 acres in this tract to George William Fairfax, see Fairfax to GW, c.19 Dec. 1772.

The £200 paid to Marmaduke Norfleet was the fifth annual payment on the £1,200 that GW and Fielding Lewis agreed to pay for the 1,093½ acres in Perquimans County, N.C., which they bought from Norfleet in 1766 (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 239; General Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 18; see Deed from Marmaduke Norfleet, 26 April 1766, and source note). See also Memorandum, 20 Nov. 1772. Hector Ross gave GW the £20 in May to send to John Washington. See cash accounts for May 1772.

This was for “weaving & Ball. Acct” (Cash Memoranda, 1772-75 description begins “Pocket-day-Book or Cash-Memorandums,” 9 Aug. 1772–27 May 1773, 29 May 1773–22 March 1774, 26 Oct. 1774–3 May 1775. Manuscript in George Washington Papers, Library of Congress. 24 March-31 October 1774. Manuscript in Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, Calif. description ends ).

A receipted bill dated 16 Dec. from John Goodrich, Jr., is in the Custis Papers (ViHi). The bill covers charges for shipping a troublesome slave to the West Indies in August (see Joseph Valentine to GW, 24 Aug. 1771, n.1) and the duty and freight on nine hogsheads of molasses in November. John Goodrich, Jr., was the son of John Goodrich, a well-to-do merchant of Portsmouth.

On 8 July 1772 Andrew Judge signed a four-year indenture with a merchant, Alexander Coldclough. He was to be sent to “Baltimore or any port in America” (DLC:GW). For GW’s account with Judge, a tailor, and the list of “Taylor’s Work” done by him from 1772 to 1780, see Lund Washington’s Mount Vernon account book (ViMtvL), ff. 12, 8, 18, 19, 20, 32, and 78.

The fish and cranberries were purchased from a “New Engld Vessell” (Cash Memoranda, 1772-75 description begins “Pocket-day-Book or Cash-Memorandums,” 9 Aug.

Baldwin Buckner was at Mount Vernon on this day when he contracted, on behalf of himself and his brother John, with GW to buy flour for the West Indian trade. See Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 3:148–49, General Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 65. GW noted in his Cash Memoranda, 1772-75 description begins “Pocket-day-Book or Cash-Memorandums,” 9 Aug. 1772–27 May 1773, 29 May 1773–22 March 1774, 26 Oct. 1774–3 May 1775. Manuscript in George Washington Papers, Library of Congress. 24 March-31 October 1774. Manuscript in Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, Calif. description ends : “Charge Messrs Baldwin & Jno. Buckner with their Bond for 616.13.0.”

In his Cash Memoranda, 1772-75 description begins “Pocket-day-Book or Cash-Memorandums,” 9 Aug. 1772–27 May 1773, 29 May 1773–22 March 1774, 26 Oct. 1774–3 May 1775. Manuscript in George Washington Papers, Library of Congress. 24 March-31 October 1774. Manuscript in Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, Calif. description ends GW has a detailed account of “Cash on hand 13th Decr,” totaling £584.14, not £425.14.3.
