AD, General Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 88.

See note 5 in the enclosure, GW to Fielding Lewis, 20 April.

GW bought the parrot for Martha Parke Custis, perhaps from the captain of the brig Nancy which seems to have been tied up at the Mount Vernon dock for at least five days (Cash Memoranda, 1772-75 description begins “Pocket-day-Book or Cash-Memorandums,” 9 Aug. 1772–27 May 1773, 29 May 1773–22 March 1774, 26 Oct. 1774–3 May 1775. Manuscript in George Washington Papers, Library of Congress. 24 March-31 October 1774. Manuscript in Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, Calif. description ends ; Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 3:171).

GW and John Parke Custis did not go to Annapolis until 12 April. GW returned home on 18 April. See ibid., 172–73.

GW’s account with John and Thomas Kirkpatrick shows on 1 Jan. 1772 a balance of £2.5 against them (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 279). An undated entry in Ledger B balances his account with Thomas Kirkpatrick by crediting Kirkpatrick with £2.5 for “dying some Cotton in Glasgow—pr Mr Jno. Kirkpatrick” (General Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 25). Thomas Kirkpatrick, a Scot, was in business in Alexandria in the 1760s with his brother, John Kirkpatrick, GW’s military secretary in the French and Indian War.
