From George Washington to John Dandridge, 28 May 1795
To John Dandridge
Philadelphia 28th May 1795
Whereas John Dandridge Esquire of New Kent County, Virginia, has made known to me that he can advantageously dispose of a young negro man called Anderson belonging to me & now in possession of said Dandridge,1 I hereby give my approbation to, & ratify any sale which he the said Dandridge may think proper to make on my behalf of said negro Anderson.2

1. GW probably referred to John Dandridge (d. 1799), a lawyer. He was the son of Martha Washington’s brother Bartholomew Dandridge (1737–1785) and Mary Burbidge Dandridge.
2. On 22 Oct., GW recorded that he had received $200 from Dandridge’s sale of Anderson (, 22).
