J’ai l’honneur de Vous adresser quelques Billets d’invitation pour la seance publique de la société Royale de médecine, qui aura lieu le 27 de ce mois et dont elle Vous prie de Vouloir bien disposer. La Compagnie espére que Vous Voudrez bien honorer cette assemblée de Votre présence.9
Je serai en mon particulier infiniment flatté, si nous avons le bonheur de Vous posséder à cette séance. J’y ferai la lecture de l’Eloge du Célebre M. foterghill dont j’ai appris, depuis peu de jours, que Vous êtiez l’ami. Entre autres matériaux qui m’ont été adressés pour servir à la redaction de cet éloge, j’ai reçu celui qui en a été fait par M Thompson.1 Si Vous aviez quelques anecdotes particulieres relatives à M foterghill Je Vous prie de Vouloir bien me les Communiquer, Je m’empresserai d’en faire usage.2

9. The meeting was held on Aug. 27 at 4:30 p.m. at the Louvre. Vicq d’Azyr read his eulogy (mentioned below) near the end of the session: Jour. de Paris, issues of Aug. 27, 28, and 30, 1782.
1. In May David Barclay had sent BF two tributes to Fothergill, who died on Dec. 26, 1780: XXXVII, 423. One of them may have been Gilbert Thompson’s Memoirs of the Life and a View of the Character of the Late Dr. Fothergill (London, 1782). Thompson, a close friend of Fothergill’s, was also a physician: ODNB.
2. Vicq d’Azyr’s eulogy was printed in the Histoire de la Société royale de médecine (10 vols., Paris, 1779–[90]), IV (1785), 50–84. It says that he drew information from tributes published by Fothergill’s fellow physicians Gilbert Thompson, John Elliot, William Hird, and John C. Lettsom, and owed the greatest debt to Lettsom: Histoire, p. 52. Lettsom had earlier asked BF for anecdotes about Fothergill: XXXV, 479.
