1. GW sent this £20 for Hector Ross to John Washington by Fielding Lewis in December. See Cash Accounts, December 1772, and Memorandum, 20 Nov. 1772.

4. In the Memorandum: List of Tithables, c.10 June 1772, GW lists London and Anthony at his Home House farm at Mount Vernon. London, who had lost part of his toes from frostbite, was sent in 1773 with Gilbert Simpson to settle GW’s land at Washington’s Bottom. See GW to Simpson, 23 Feb. 1773, and note 2 to that letter. Strephon, at this time about eleven years old, was among the slaves taken from Mount Vernon by the Savage, a British sloop of war, in April 1781. He was trained as a cooper (Lund Washington’s list of slaves taken by the Savage, 1781, ViMtvL).

5. Gum Spring was located on the south branch of Little Hunting Creek at the place where the road from Mount Vernon entered the main road from Alexandria to Pohick Church.

6. William Bernard’s wife, Sarah Savin Bernard, was left £250 current money by Thomas Colvill. See GW to John West, Jr., December 1767, nn.1 and 2.

7. GW’s diary entry for 4 Dec. 1771 included: “Went up to the Election & the Ball I had given at Alexa.” (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 3:74). After Governor Dunmore dissolved the House of Burgesses on 12 Oct. 1771, GW and Col. John West were reelected from Fairfax on the day of the ball.

8. Charles Willson Peale (1741–1827) came to Mount Vernon on 18 May, and GW finished sitting for his portrait in his uniform as colonel of the Virginia Regiment on 22 April, before setting out for Leesburg where he joined Bryan Fairfax. See ibid., 1:frontispiece. Peale remained at Mount Vernon to paint miniatures of Martha Washington and of John Parke and Martha Parke Custis. See ibid., 3:108–9. GW charged Martha Parke Custis’s miniature to her account, and those of John Parke Custis and Martha Washington to Custis’s account. See Guardian Accounts, 3 Nov. 1773.
