In the general account of the personal property in the Custis estate (doc. III-B), it was determined that each of the three heirs was entitled to property valued at £1,617.18.0 5/12 sterling and £7,618.7.11½ current money. In October–November 1759 John Parke Custis was assigned property (slaves and goods) valued at £571.4.1½ sterling and £8,235.15 current (doc. III-C–2). The latter figure is £617.7.0½ more than was due him as his one-third share, and it is carried over as a debit to this account.

See GW to James Gildart, 20 Sept. 1759, n.1. The other one-third would have been charged to the dower account.

The “other side” refers to the credit side of the account, where the total rent is £129.7.6, of which Mrs. Washington was entitled to one-third.

This may be part of the final settlement with John Mercer for his handling the Dunbar case. See Editorial Note, 20 April 1759–5 Nov. 1761. Mercer in his account book has this entry for June 1760 under George Washington: “Colo. [John] Robinsons order for a State. of Custis’s Case—187.9,” followed by “For Colo. Custis’s Estate” (ViHi: John Mercer’s Account Book, 64).

The figure £1,456.19.5 5/12 as the sterling balance due from the estate to John Parke Custis April 1761 is the amount assigned to him in the two estate accounts (docs. III-C–2, £1,617.18 sterling, and IV-A, £563.4. 11/12 sterling) less the sterling liabilities charged to him in his estate accounts (docs. III-C–2, £571.4.1½ sterling to October 1759, and IV-B, £152.18.6 sterling for October 1759 to April 1761).

This is the total sterling amount due John Parke Custis from the estate after the initial settlement in October 1759. It is carried over from his individual estate account printed here as doc. III-C–2.

The blank is a reminder that John Parke Custis will be credited with onethird of the 51 hogsheads not yet accounted for.

The balance of £293.2.11 10/12 current money is struck on the Contra side to show John Parke Custis in debt to the estate of this amount, which is carried forward to the Debit side of his next account. See note 1.
